A person is eligible for U.S. citizenship when he or she has been a legal permanent resident for the past five years, is the spouse of a citizen who has legally resided in the country for at least three years, have served in the U.S. military or is the son or daughter of a citizen. The person must then submit the Application for Naturalization and pass U.S. history, English language and American civics exams.
